What exams do I have to take to apply?
All applicants are required to take the GRE General Test. Applicants whose native language is other than English and who do not hold a degree from an institution at which English is the language of instruction must submit TOEFL scores.

Harvard LLM
To apply to the LL.M. program, applicants must complete the relevant parts of the Graduate Program's application materials. These call for applicants to provide information about themselves and the studies they propose to pursue at Harvard, letters of recommendation from professors and others who know their work, and transcripts from each university they have attended.
In addition, all applicants from non-English speaking countries or who did not receive their legal education entirely in the English language must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination within two years prior to submitting their applications. The Graduate Program requires a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based test (with a minimum score of 60 on each of the three subsections and a score of at least 5.0 on the TWE), or a minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (with a minimum score of 25 on each subsection). Applicants with at least two years of university education conducted entirely in English may request a waiver of the TOEFL exam; however, such waivers are not automatic, and are granted at the sole discretion of the Graduate Program.
TOEFL is offered by the Educational Testing Service at locations around the world. For more information, check their web site or contact them at TOEFL Services, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541, USA.

Yale
The TOEFL is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. This requirement is waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a college or university where English is the primary language of instruction. If you qualify (on the basis of your answers to specific questions in the application), no waiver form is necessary. If you do not qualify for a waiver but have taken the TOEFL within the last two years you will need to have your TOEFL scores released to us (code 3987). If your scores can no longer be released, you will need to take the test. The test should be taken as early as possible to ensure that your scores are received in time to be incorporated in your file. Normally TOEFL scores will not be released if they are older then two years. If you took the TOEFL before and ETS will release those scores then you should not have to retake the examination.
International English Language Test System (IELTS). You may substitute IELTS for TOEFL.

TOEFL/IELTS

Stanford

Q. Do I need to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)?
A: Scores are required of all applicants whose first language is not English. Exceptions are granted for applicants who have earned a U.S. bachelor’s or master’s degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association in the United States, or the equivalent of either degree from a non-U.S. college or university of recognized standing where all instruction is provided in English. This exception does not apply if the courses were completed in a country where English is spoken but not all courses were provided in English. Being a U.S. citizen does not automatically exempt an applicant from taking the TOEFL; if the applicant’s first language is not English, the applicant must meet the exception above or submit TOEFL scores.
